Visayas and Mindanao still free of African swine fever, which gave rise to the culling of about 7,000 hogs in Luzon, Department of Agriculture said on Monday.
Agriculture Assistant Secretary Noel Reyes told DZMM that, the disease is “concentrated” in the provinces of Rizal, Bulacan, and Quezon City.
Reyes also told DZMM that unlike China, we are lucky because the ocean serves as a geographical barrier.
Although not contagious to other animals and humans, pigs affected by African swine fever always ends in death, authorities said.
The government had given 3,000 PHP for every culled pig and soon after they have offered a loan amounting to 30,000 PHP to hog farmers. Reyes also insisted that they will collect more funds if these are not enough.
