One hundred and fifty eight Filipino immigrants were sent home from the United Arab Emirates arrived in Manila on October 6, the Department of Foreign Affairs said.
Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Sarah Arriola, said that the migrant workers were victims of illegal trafficking. In this regard, 74 of the repatriates are from Abu Dhabi, while 84 are from Dubai.
Arriola said in a statement, “The Philippine government strongly condemns the abuses being experienced by our OFWs in the hands of their recruiters or employers,”
Majority of the repatriates left the Philippines using tourist or visit visas and were guaranteed a working visa by illegal recruiters, Consul General to Dubai Paul Raymund stated.
“Many of them were overworked, suffered maltreatment, and experienced contract violations by their employer,” he added.
