Some parts of the UAE are enjoying raindrops for the past few days because of cloud seeding. This is a type of weather modification that targets to change the amount precipitation that falls from the clouds.

According to National Center of Meteorology (NCM), the ongoing cloud seeding operations are expected to extend until October 7, 2019 over the northern and easterly part of the country.

Cloud seeding operations was instigated few days back because of forecasted clouds, Khalid Al Obeieli, Head of Cloud Seeding Operations, NCM, told Khaleej Times in a statement.

“This is actually related to where the clouds are forecast, and these have been predicted by our staff at the eastern and northern parts of the country.”

He added that this is a day to day job to keep seeding clouds wherever they are. “You can say we are chasing clouds wherever they are each and every day.”

With summary weather reports in the morning, the center identifies convective clouds that are suitable for cloud seeding. Then, a group of pilot stationed at Al Ain airport will commence the cloud seeding operations, he said.

“Each and every one of the planes on call at Al Ain airport carries 48 flares that contain about 1kg of sodium chloride each, and blow them below the clouds, not above them, to get more rains.”

This weather modification shown positive effects in which the amount of rainwater increased by 15 to 30 percent, he added.
