Twitters apologized for accidentally using phone numbers and email addresses for advertising purposes even though the personal data provided is said to provide account security.
Numbers and email addresses submitted by Twitter users for account authentication were match to advertisers’ data to enable ads.
“When you provided an email address or phone number for safety or security purposes this data may have inadvertently been used for advertising purposes. This it was an error and we apologize, ” Twitter said.
Twitter said the issue was fixed in mid-September and assured that it won’t happen again.
