The first catholic mass in Luzon happened in the province of Sorsogon in 1569, after nearly 450 years, Filipino Catholics celebrate the historic event on Saturday.
Papal Nuncio to the Apostolic of the Philippines, Gabrielle Caccia, led the celebration in Barangay Siuton, Magallanes town.
The Gibalon Shrine was rehabilitated and designed similar to a galleon, it is dedicated in memory of the first Mass.
The shrine was designed just like the galleon used by the Spanish missionary group led by Fray Alonso Jimenez to reach Gibalon Village in 1569. The Spanish created a chapel made out of bamboo and nipa during that year and commenced the very first holy mass in Luzon.
A miracle was witnessed in Gibalon when the chieftain of the village died and came back to life after four days, Bicolano historian Danny Gerona claimed.
After the miraculous event, the chieftain encouraged the villagers to accept the Christian blessing by Fr. Jimenez, Gerona said.
A stage performance through a re-enactment and dramatization were also performed by Sorsoganons.
The Papal Nuncio insisted that the faith introduced by Fr. Jimenez and their forefather will always remain and be strengthened.
