NARRATED Abdullah bin Anies Al Juhani, may Allah be pleased with him: I said: O Apostle of Allah, tell me, in which of the nights should we seek the Night of Decree? He [pbuh] said: «If it wasn’t that the people would leave the prayers except for this night, I would have told you». [Reporter: Al Haythami Rank: Good]
Pious Muslims around the globe await this special night with lots of acts of worship and/or righteousness. The reason being, as Allah the Exalted mentioned in the Glorious Qur’an “The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months” [97:3]. That is to say, the reward given by Allah for any act of righteousness equals the reward of doing the same act over a period of 1000 months or even more.
It is a night of a great blessings, where Allah the Almighty showers the believers with His Mercy and forgive those who repent.
Mother of the Believers Ayisha, may Allah be pleased with her reported: I said, O Apostle of Allah, assuming I figured out which night is the Night of Decree, what prayer do I say then? He [pbuh] said: «Say: Lord! You are oft Forgiving, and you love to pardon, so pardon me». [Al-Tirmizi]
But when does this Night fall? Narrated Mother of the Believers Ayisha, may Allah be pleased with her that the Apostle of Allah [pbuh] said: «Seek it on the odd numbered nights of the last ten (days) of Ramadan». [Al Bukhari]
This is to say it may be the night preceding the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th and the 29th of Ramadan. Nevertheless, it is widely believed it falls on the night preceding the 27th of Ramadan. Some people back up this assumption by the following interesting facts concerning Chapter 97 known as Surat al-Qadr:
The total words in this chapter are 30 words, which are equal to the total volumes in the Glorious Qur’an.
The Arabic word (Hiya) referring to the Night is the 27th word in this chapter.
The word (Al-Qadr) was repeated in this chapter (3) times: namely the 5th, 10th and 12th, which ads up to (27).
Other scholars argue that if this Night is in the noblest of all months (Ramadan), and falls in the noblest days of this month (the last 10 days), and in the noblest nights (those of the odd days) then it must fall similarly in the noblest of all days of the week: Friday or Monday.
The safest way however is to strive hard during the last ten nights, through reading or reciting the Qur’an, praise Allah constantly, and perform the voluntarily night prayers. There are lots of other acts that are of no less importance, such as giving a charity every night, which will add up to giving a charity for a thousand months or more, which is approximately equals to 84 years.
May Allah the Almighty bless us to be amongst the winners in this blessed month, and grant us salvation from the hellfire, and admit us to His Paradise, Amen.
