Chinese President Xi Jinping and French President Emmanuel Macron will sign the Paris climate agreement with the word “irreversibility” on the deal, an official from French presidential said on Tuesday.
The agreement follows the administration of President Donald Trump as it filed a paperwork on Monday to withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement, marks the formality of the one year process to exit global pact to fight climate change.
The shift is part of a broader strategy by Trump to eliminate red tape on American industry, but it timely comes when scientists and governments initiate rapid actions to prevent the worst impacts of climate change.
Macron’s subordinate said to reporters in Shanghai following their state visit on China, expressing their dismay on the US move.
“We regret this and this only makes the Franco-Chinese partnership on the climate and biodiversity more necessary,” the official said.
“The text that will be signed tomorrow includes a paragraph on the irreversibility of the Paris agreement.”
Macron and the Chinese president are set to attend a formal meeting in Beijing on Wednesday.
