The ‘One Year to Go’ countdown started off with a jam-packed event— an evening of activities, freebies, and full extravaganza.
The event seeks to inspire entrepreneurs, help transforms lives, and save mother Earth. Free drinking water was given away together with biodegradable bottles that aim to save 100,000 plus plastic bottles.
It featured music, performing arts, sumptuous food, and graphic arts and was live streamed across the Emirates in the following areas: Louvre Abu Dhabi, Al Majaz Waterfront in Sharjah, Ajman Museum, Umm Al Quwain Corniche, Al Qawasim Corniche in Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah Fort.
“As we mark One Year to Go until the UAE welcomes the world to Expo 2020, these spectacular nationwide celebrations will usher in the final leg of a historic journey and a major achievement not only for Dubai, but for the entire UAE,” Her Excellency Reem Al Hashimy, Minister of State for International Cooperation and Director-General, Expo 2020 Dubai said.
“Our One Year to Go festivities offer a window into the once-in-a-lifetime celebration that awaits from 20 October 2020. They are an opportunity for us to look forward to this momentous occasion for our young, dynamic nation as we prepare to see our leadership’s vision burst into life at Expo 2020 Dubai,” she added.
The Expo 2020 brought the world closer as it welcomed 200 international participants on top of the audience who witnessed the performances of the Emirati singer and Expo 2020 Ambassador Hussain Al Jassmi and the award winning American pop star Mariah Carey.
At exactly 20:20, UAE time, the skyscraper was lit up with “1 year to go” and “the world’s greatest show” in English and Arabic. A spectacular fireworks display also marked the start of the celebration.
Underneath the illuminated Burj Khalifa and the dancing Dubai Fountains, Mariah sang her all time hits including ‘Always Be My Baby,’ ‘We Belong Together,’ ‘Obsessed,’ ‘It’s Like That’ and finished off with her heartfelt rendition of ‘Hero.’ Fans were lucky enough to witness the concert for free!
“I’m so happy to be here and excited to be part of the one-year countdown of the Dubai Expo. I hope all of you will be there next year,” she said.
Meanwhile, the Emirati singer Hussain Al Jassmi performed hits that made the audience grove. He also generously sang a birthday song for a fan in the crowd.
‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’ is the theme that it upholds. From October 20, 2020 to April 21, 2021, 192 countries will be participating the expo with over 60 different shows and performances, and much more, everyday.
