A Chinese entity has been working with at least three basketball teams to fix games in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL), Senator Manny Pacquiao said Tuesday.

The foreign entity has been paying off MPBL players, coaching staff and other officials if they partake in the scheme, some are paid P20, 000 a game, Pacquiao insisted.

“’Yung mastermind, hindi sila Filipino so lalo akong nagagalit kasi biruin mo pupunta ka sa ibang bansa, hindi ka citizen doon tapos gagawa ka ng [kalokohan]?” Pacquiao said.

According to MPBP legal counsel, Brando Viernesto, the alleged group will place a bet on an online gambling site, then the person will try to control the game in their favor.

“They tell the players you have to score this much only, and that number is based on a betting site,” Viernesto said.

“So they bet on that number and they win, then they give bonuses to the players.”

Authorities already founded out the persons behind the scheme, but will not reveal following the ongoing investigation.

“Meron tayong i-recommend na hindi na sila makapaglaro in any league in the Philippines, dapat madisiplina din ang mga atleta natin, nagtitimpi lang ako pero meron tayong batas,” Pacquiao said.

The senator offered a P500, 000 reward for whistleblower that lead to uncovering the said scheme.

The founder of MPBL, Pacquiao, recently suspended the entire Soccsksargen Marlins for allegedly fixing games.
