The expansion of law which allows journalists to protect identities of their sources, Republic Act (RA) No. 53 on the so-called ‘Sotto Law’ was signed by President Rodrigo Duterte.

Under the amendment, media practitioners from television, radio and online cannot be compelled to reveal the sources of any news item. Unless, it is required by the court, House of Representatives, or the Senate or any of the committees of congress that deem the revelation is important to the safety of the state.
Before it was amended, the 73-year-old Sotto law, only protects publishers, editors, columnists, and reporters of print media.
