DUBAI – Celebrating its 119th year of Philippine Independence, the Philippine Consulate General (PCG) in Dubai and the Northern Emirates held a special ceremony at its premises.
Philippine Consul General Paul Raymund Cortes led the singing of the national anthem “Lupang Hinirang” on Monday, June 12. He was joined by his wife, Dr. Yasmin Cortes, the PCG Philippine Overseas Labor Office – Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (POLO-OWWA) staff and invited Filipino community leaders.
“The occasion was a solemn, serene, and very introspective activity which allowed us to rethink our priorities as a nation and as a united people with the single vision of peace and development in all parts of the country,” he said.
The official thanked all the attendees who were present during the special occasion on behalf of his wife and his staff.
“Our partnership highlights the collaboration between government and the overseas Filipinos so that we lock our hands and hearts together, ensuring a united community working towards further prosperity and a long lasting safe and secure environment for ourselves, our families, and succeeding generations of Filipinos,” Cortes added.
Dressed in the Philippine national costumes, Barong Tagalog and Filipiniana, attendees proudly sang the national anthem acapella during the flag raising ceremony.
The Philippines declared independence from Spain on June 12, 1898, after being ruled for over 300 years.
The national anthem “Lupang Hinirang” or also known as “Chosen Land” was composed by Julian Felipe. The lyrics were originally in Spanish and later translated into Tagalog in the beginning of 1940s.
