HadithNarrated Abdullah bin Masoud, may Allah be pleased with him, the Messenger of Allah peace be upon him [pbuh] said: “No person has in his heart the weight of an atom of arrogance will ever be admitted to paradise, nor will he ever enter the hellfire who has in his heart the weight of an atom of faith. (Ibn Masoud) Added: A man commented saying: I like to have on me a decent clothes as well as good footwear. The Messenger of Allah [pbuh] replied: (Verily) Allah does like the beauty, but the (actual/real) arrogance is rejection of Truth and looking down on others”.

The verses from the Glorious Qur’an, as well as the Ahadith of the Messenger [pbuh] in reference to arrogance are so many and numerous. Some type of arrogance is a pure act of disbelief, such as the statement of Faroah: “I am your Lord the Most High”.

Rejection of a revelation from Allah is another act of arrogance against the Almighty, which dooms the person to eternal life in hellfire.

The other type of arrogance which is not an act of disbelief, yet constitutes a major sin, is looking down at the others and belittling them for whatever reason. Such a behavior is totally unacceptable in Islam, hence the threat of not getting admission into paradise.

Reported Imam Ahmad in his “Musnad” that Abdullah bin Omar and Abdullah bin Amr, may Allah be pleased with them, were standing on (mount) Marwa talking, whereupon Abdullah bin Amr left, and Abdullah bin Omar stayed in place weeping. A man approached him and asked him, what making you cry? He replied: Him – pointing to Abdullah bin Amr – he said, he heard the Messenger of Allah [pbuh] saying: Whoever has in his heart the weight of a mustard (seed) of arrogance, Allah shall throw him on his face in hellfire.

Such was the fear of the companions, may Allah be pleased with them all, worked hard to be humble to one another, lest any feeling of arrogance sneak into their hearts and deprive them the admission to paradise.

Narrated Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him, the Messenger of Allah [pbuh] said: “Three, Allah will never talk to on the Day of Judgment, nor will He purify them or look at them, rather there is a severe punishment for them: An adulterous old man, a liar king, and an arrogant poor (man).

On the hand, he who has in his heart the weight of an atom of faith – that is in Allah the Exalted – shall never enter the hellfire. This is not a license however to dwell into sins and claim faith in Allah the Exalted. Scholars of Islam have explained the statement to mean “not to be doomed to eternal life in hellfire”.

We ask the Almighty Allah to grant us humbleness for Him and His servants, and remove any arrogance from our hearts, and accept us as servants of Him, amen.
